When Tesla unveiled the Model 3 in March 2016 there was a lot of confusion around the missing instrument cluster behind the steering wheel, also known as a binnacle dashboard.

This lead to speculation that Tesla would install a Heads Up Display like some higher-end vehicles. In a Heads Up Display (HUD) the car projects speed along with other information on to the windshield directly in the line of sight for the drive.

After being asked on Twitter, Elon Musk responded to this question with a simple “No” response. Upon follow-up, he elaborated that the car will one-day be able to drive itself not requiring the driver to worry about the speed or direction of the vehicle, similar to when riding in a Taxi.

Even still, rumors persisted, and it wasn’t until the handover event in July of 2017 that it was truly confirmed there is no dashboard of any kind behind the steering wheel.

After driving my Tesla Model 3 for a couple weeks I realized this was an issue. The primary concern I have isn’t related to speed but navigation. When navigating, the Model 3 displays the turn-by-turn directions on the far right side of the center display, far from even my periphery view.

A simple fix I found is to install a cell phone mount on the dash directly behind the steering wheel. Since the dashboard sits lower than normal your phone displays perfectly in the position where a normal dashboard would sit.

To make the process even more seamless I use an app called Tasker which automatically launches the app Waze when my phone connects to my Model 3. From there Waze takes over and offers rider alerts, speed warnings, and voice commands including my Spotify playlists.

Overall I’ve found this to be an elegant solution in its simplicity to a seemingly complex problem.
